My career: Science writer
How do I contribute to the Hubble
Space Telescope mission? I write news releases about Hubble discoveries for the news
media and the public. I also team with the education group to
write about Hubble science for children. What or who inspired me to really go after the
profession I am in now? My high school history teacher, Mr. Corbin, inspired me to pursue a career in journalism. I learned the importance of the media for a democratic society and thought about becoming a newspaper reporter. What I like about my job:
Researching a topic, interviewing scientists on that topic, and then writing about it are what I like about my job. What school subjects do I use at work?
Writing, physics, chemistry, and biology. Resources I would recommend checking out to
learn more about my career: Science writers belong to a national professional organization called the National Association of Science Writers. The group has published a book called "A Field Guide for Science Writers," by Deborah Blum and Mary Knudson.
What I like to do when I'm not working:
Read, play with my son, cook, woodcarving, church volunteer work, and gardening.

My career:
Materials engineer How do I contribute to the Hubble
Space Telescope mission? I have been working in the Materials Engineering Branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for 25 years. Among the many other projects at GSFC, I have been supporting the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) project for more than 16 years. For the last 10 years I have been supporting HST as a test engineer.
What or who inspired me to really go after the
profession I am in now? I attended Widener University where I met a professor who told me of a job posting that led to my job in the Materials Engineering Branch at GSFC.
I also have a strong curiosity about the workings of the universe, and I have always pursued a deeper understanding of our impact on our planet in the hope of finding ways to minimize it. Fortunately this is also the mission of GSFC as well. What I like about my job:
I get to solve lots of technically challenging problems, and the problems are always different.
What school subjects do I use at work?
I use skills I learned in classes such as mathematics, physics, electronics engineering, data analysis, and professional writing.

I run and compete in races that range from the 5K to the marathon. I also play the bagpipes and drums in a pipe band, work with a Boy Scout Troop, conduct genealogy research, and vacation at the beach in the spring and summer.
