Solar System Trading Cards Education Standards
Grade level: 3-6 —Target grade: 4
Learning Outcomes Project 2061 Standards McREL Standards and Benchmarks

Students will identify planets and other solar system objects using visual clues. Students will read information to learn about planets and other solar system objects.

The Physical Setting
Standard A: The Universe.

By the end of the 5th grade, students should know that:

  • The Earth is one of several planets that orbit the Sun, and the Moon orbits around the Earth.

By the end of the 8th grade, students should know that:

  • Nine planets of very different size, composition, and surface features move around the Sun in nearly circular orbits. Some planets have a great variety of moons and even flat rings of rock and ice particles orbiting around them. Some of these planets and moons show evidence of geologic activity. The earth is orbited by one Moon, many artificial satellites, and debris.

Science Standard 3
Level II (Grades 3-5)
Benchmark 2:

Knows that the Earth is one of several planets that orbit the Sun and that the Moon orbits the Earth.

Level III (Grades 6-8)
Benchmark 1:

Knows characteristics and movement patterns of the nine planets in our Solar System (e.g., planets differ in size, composition, and surface features; planets move around the Sun in elliptical orbits; some planets have moons, rings of particles, and other satellites orbiting them).

Language Arts Standard 7
Level II (Grades 3-5)
Benchmark 1:
Uses reading skills and strategies to understand a variety of informational texts (e.g., textbooks, biographical sketches, letters, diaries, directions, procedures, magazines).

Level III (Grades 6-8)
Benchmark 1:

Uses reading skills and strategies to understand a variety of informational texts (e.g., electronic texts; textbooks; biographical sketches; directions; essays; primary source historical documents, including letters and diaries; print media, including editorials, news stories, periodicals, and magazines; consumer, workplace, and public documents, including catalogs, technical directions, procedures, and bus routes).

  • Understand that other objects exist in the solar system besides Earth.
  • Be able to read grade-level appropriate material.

Common misconceptions
Students may think that:

  • The Earth is the center of the solar system.
  • Scientists know all there is to know about the solar system.
  • The objects in the solar system are the same size and are equally spaced.
  • Stars, galaxies and black holes are part of the solar system.
  • The Sun is not a star.
