A star, by definition, has nuclear fusion going on inside. Stars fuse elements together. Our Sun fuses hydrogen together and makes helium, and when it runs out of hydrogen (in a few billion years) it will fuse helium to make carbon and oxygen. Planets do not have nuclear fusion, because they are too small to generate the necessary pressure and temperature.
