Hubble Deep Field Academy Education Standards
Grade level: 6-8 —Target grade: 7
Learning Outcome National Science Education Standards Project 2061 Standards NCTM Standards McREL Standards and Benchmarks

In “Stellar Statistician” students will estimate the number of objects in the Hubble Deep Field and compare their estimate with astronomers’ estimates.

Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry.
As a result of activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop the abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry, i.e. use mathematics in all aspects of scientific inquiry.

Habits of Mind:
E. Critical Response Skills.

By the end of the 8th grade, students should:

  • Be aware that there may be more than one good way to interpret a given set of findings.
In grades 6-8 all students should compute fluently and make reasonable estimates.  
In “Cosmic Classifier” students will classify objects in the Hubble Deep Field, describe their characteristics, and use a table to display their data. Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry.
As a result of activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop the abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry, i.e. use mathematics in all aspects of scientific inquiry.
  In grades 6-8 all students should formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them.  

In “Galactic Guide” students will estimate the distances of objects in the Hubble Deep Field from Earth using the relationship between size, brightness and distance.

As a result of activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop the abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry, i.e. Use mathematics in all aspects of scientific inquiry.

In “Universal Graduate” students will demonstrate their knowledge of galaxy properties and characteristics by answering questions.       Language Arts Standard 7.

Benchmark 4:

Uses new information to adjust and extend personal knowledge base.
