What we can see today: the Andromeda galaxy

This image, taken in 1979 by the Burrell Schmidt telescope on Kitt Peak, shows a detailed view of Andromeda, also known as M31. Andromeda is the closest large galaxy to the Milky Way, and the brightest in the night sky.
