Comets: Fixing Shockwave

Sometimes, while upgrading the Shockwave player, the following events occur:

The only solution that Amazing Space has found to these upgrade problems is to completely remove any sign of the Shockwave player from the computer, then redownload and install the latest Shockwave player.

Please choose your platform for guidance on how to remove Shockwave.

After removing Shockwave, you should be able to go to the Shockwave download site and successfully install the latest Player.

Windows: Removing Shockwave

Netscape

The plugin resides in a directory under the Netscape program directory. Usually this can be found under:

C:\\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins

The files that need to be removed are as follows:

If the Plugins directory is not exactly where it is specified above, use the Start menu item:

Start -> Find -> Files or Folders

and look for the file np32dsw*. The directory found is where you will want to delete the specified files.

Once deleted, return to the Shockwave download site and follow the installation instructions.

If this does not fix the problems, it is possible you are running multiple copies of Netscape and you have deleted files in a copy you are not running. Again use the Start menu item:

Start -> Find -> Files or Folders

and find all occurrences of np32dws* and remove all copies of the specified files.

Internet Explorer

The only problem with upgrading that Amazing Space has seen is the upgrade loop. It appears that if you keep getting prompted for

You have an older version. Do you wish to Upgrade?

answer NO the second time, and reboot the system. The first installation appears to work and all should be fine after the reboot.

Macintosh: Removing Shockwave

Once you have found all the Plug-ins folders, the files that need to be removed are as follows:

Once deleted, return to the Shockwave download site and follow the installation instructions.

If this does not fix the problems, it is possible you are running multiple copies of Netscape/Internet Explorer and you have deleted files in a copy you are not running. Use the Finder, as specified above, and remove all copies of the specified files.
