The Online Exploration No Escape includes two sections:
“Is a Black Hole Really a Hole?,” which contains several modules, and “Beats Us — You Explain it.”

“Is a Black Hole Really a Hole” Education Standards
Grade level: 8-12 —Target grade: 10

By completing the modules “Anatomy of a Black Hole” and “What Types of Black Hole are There?” students will learn basic science ideas about black holes.

 

4. The Physical Setting:
G. Forces of Nature.

By the end of the 12th grade, students should know that:

  • Gravitational force is an attraction between masses. The strength of the force is proportional to the masses and weakens rapidly with increasing distance between them.

 

 

By completing the “Pathway to Discovery” module students learn the history of the discovery of black holes.

Content Standard G:
History and Nature of Science.

As a result of activities in grades 9-12, all students should develop understandings of historical perspectives.

  • Usually, changes in science occur as small modifications in extant knowledge. The daily work of science and engineering results in incremental advances in our understanding of the world and our ability to meet human needs and aspirations. Much can be learned about the internal workings of science and the nature of science from study of individual scientists, their daily work, and their efforts to advance scientific knowledge in their area of study.
  • The historical perspective of scientific explanations demonstrates how scientific knowledge changes by evolving over time, almost always building on earlier knowledge.

By the end of the 8th grade, students should know that:

  • Important contributions to the advancement of science, mathematics, and technology have been made by different kinds of people, in different cultures, at different times.

Science Standard 13.
Level III (Grade 6-8) Benchmark 5:

Knows that throughout history, many scientific innovators have had difficulty breaking through accepted ideas of their time to reach conclusions that are now considered to be common knowledge.

By completing the “Hubble Hunts Black Holes” module students learn about the technology required to confirm the existence of black holes.

Content Standard A:
Science as Inquiry.

As a result of activities in grades 9-12, all students should develop understandings about scientific inquiry.

  • Scientists rely on technology to enhance the gathering and manipulation of data. New techniques and tools provide new evidence to guide inquiry and new methods to gather data, thereby contributing to the advance of science. The accuracy and precision of the data, and therefore the quality of the exploration, depends on the technology used.

3. The Nature of Technology:
A. Technology and Science.

By the end of the 8th grade, students should know that:

  • Technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer space and other remote locations, sample collection and treatment, measurement, data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information.

By the end of the 12th grade, students should know that:

  • Technological problems often create a demand for new scientific knowledge, and new technologies make it possible for scientists to extend their research in new ways or to undertake entirely new lines of research. The very availability of new technology itself often sparks scientific advances.

Science Standard 3.
Level IV (Grade 9-12) Benchmark 5:

Knows ways in which technology has increased our understanding of the universe (e.g., visual, radio, and x-ray telescopes collect information about the universe from electromagnetic waves; space probes gather information from distant parts of the Solar System; mathematical models and computer simulations are used to study evidence from many sources in order to form a scientific account of events in the universe).

Standard 1: Scope of Technology.
Grades 6-8 Benchmark F:

New products and systems can be developed to solve problems or to help do things that could not be done without the help of technology.

Grades 9-12 Benchmark L:
Inventions and innovations are the results of specific, goal-directed research.

As a result of completing the “What Do You Know About Black Holes?” module students will learn about the myths and facts associated with black holes.    

Language Arts Standard 7.
Level III (Grades 6-8) Benchmark 1:

Uses reading skills and strategies to understand a variety of informational texts (e.g., electronic texts; textbooks; biographical sketches; directions; essays; primary source historical documents, including letters and diaries; print media, including editorials, news stories, periodicals, and magazines; consumer, workplace, and public documents, including catalogs, technical directions, procedures, and bus routes).

Level IV (Grade 9-12) Benchmark 1:
Uses reading skills and strategies to understand a variety of informational texts (e.g., textbooks, biographical sketches, letters, diaries, directions, procedures, magazines, essays, primary source historical documents, editorials, news stories, periodicals, catalogs, job-related materials, schedules, speeches, memoranda, public documents, maps).

By completing the module “A Calculated Escape” students learn how mathematics can be used to find escape velocity.

By the end of the 12th grade, students should know that:

  • Mathematics provides a precise language for science and technology-to describe objects and events, to characterize relationships between variables, and to argue logically.
   

Beats Us — You Explain it” Education Standards
Grade level: 8-12 — Target grade: 10

By completing the section “Beats Us - You Explain it.” students write about black holes to a specific audience.

Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry.
As a result of activities in grades 9-12, all students should develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry.

  • Communicate and Defend a Scientific Argument.
    Students in school science programs should develop the abilities associated with accurate and effective communication. These include writing and following procedures, expressing concepts, reviewing information, summarizing data, using language appropriately, developing diagrams and charts, explaining statistical analysis, speaking clearly and logically, constructing a reasoned argument, and responding appropriately to critical comments.

Language Arts Standard 1.
Level III (Grade 6-8) Benchmark 5:

Uses content, style, and structure (e.g., formal or informal language, genre, organization) appropriate for specific audiences (e.g., public, private) and purposes (e.g., to entertain, to influence, to inform).

Level IV (Grade 9-12) Benchmark 5:
Uses strategies to address writing to different audiences (e.g., includes explanations and definitions according to the audience's background, age, or knowledge of the topic, adjusts formality of style, considers interests of potential readers).

Prerequisites
Students should:

  • Be able to read grade-level appropriate material.
  • Be familiar with the concepts of:
    • mass versus weight
    • radius
    • velocity
    • gravity
    • the speed of light

Common misconceptions
Students may think that:

  • Black holes are giant, cosmic vacuum cleaners that swallow up everything around them.
  • You can see a black hole.
  • Black holes lead to other places.
