Celebrating the
International Year of Astronomy
The Hubble Classroom Collage Activity (Grades 6+)

INTRODUCTION

In 1609, Galileo Galilei turned a telescope on the sky for the first time, opening a new world of discovery. To mark the 400th anniversary of that achievement, the United Nations has proclaimed 2009 the International Year of Astronomy (IYA).

Celebrate IYA with Amazing Space by participating in the interdisciplinary IYA Classroom Collage Activity, described below.

THE HUBBLE CLASSROOM COLLAGE ACTIVITY

The Hubble Classroom Collage Activity integrates art, science and language arts, and has three steps:

  1. Students vote as a class for their favorite Hubble images. In order to help students make their selections, the class can view and discuss celestial objects Hubble has observed. Hubble images and pictures of the telescope are located in HubbleSite’s Gallery section.
  2. Students create a class collage composed of their favorite Hubble images. During the activity, students can practice their reading skills and enhance their science content knowledge. Students can research the 400 years of telescope development from Galileo’s Refractor to NASA’s Great Observatories by using the Online Exploration Telescopes From the Ground Up. Students can also can learn about Hubble discoveries by reading Hubble’s Top Science Findings.
  3. Students create a composition that explains the connection between technological and scientific advancements over time. Compositions can take different forms and be completed in different ways, dependent on available class time and/or grade level.
    • Students can write a paragraph or essay explaining how and why our understanding of the universe has improved over time.
    • Students can write a paragraph or essay that compares our present-day knowledge of our universe to our knowledge in the past.
    • Students can can make verbal comparisons in the form of a video.
    • Students can create a PowerPoint presentation.
    • Students can present their comparisons in the form of a poem.
