(120K; Acrobat Reader required) This is an image of the Hubble Deep Field, which was produced by combining 276 of the 342 exposures taken over a 10-day period. Hubble reached back 10 billion years to capture a view of young, never-before-seen galaxies in various stages of evolution. The lithograph also features background information and a close-up image of a portion of the field that contains elliptical and spiral galaxies. Format(s) available: PDF
Grades: 6-12, but the material
can be adapted for use in other grades at the teacher's discretion
How to use it in the classroom
Teachers can use Lithograph: Hubble's Galaxy Gallery as: An engagement tool in an inquiry-based lesson. Have students study the image side of the lithograph. Ask them to write down three to five questions they have about the image. When the students are finished, their questions can be used in a variety of ways:
A content reading tool. Have students read the back of the lithograph and then write a quiz for the class. A source of information.
