(909K; Adobe Reader required) This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows an especially photogenic group of interacting galaxies called Arp 273. The larger of the spiral galaxies, known as UGC 1810, has a disk that is distorted into a rose-like shape by the gravitational tidal pull of the companion galaxy, known as UGC 1813, below it. Included is an inquiry-based classroom activity. Format(s) available: PDF

How to use it in the classroom
Teachers can use Lithograph: Interacting Galaxies Arp 273 as: An example of a interacting galaxies. Use the inquiry-based classroom activity, "In Search of … Interacting Galaxies," which is included with the PDF lithograph. An engagement tool in an inquiry-based lesson. Have students study the images on the lithograph. Ask them to write down as many questions as possible about the features visible in the images.
